Energy, Confidence, Individuality — and the Freedom to Dance!

Commercial Freestyle is energetic, expressive and full of personality.

It gives dancers the opportunity to move, perform and express themselves while developing coordination, musicality, technique, stamina and confidence.

At Babel School of Dance, we want our Commercial Freestyle classes to be a place where students can enjoy moving to music, challenge themselves, develop their own performance style and — most importantly — have fun.

No previous dance experience is necessary.

Whether your child already loves dancing or is looking for their very first dance class, they are very welcome at Babel.

What is Commercial Freestyle?

Commercial Freestyle is an energetic style of dance that allows students to explore movement, rhythm and performance.

Classes combine the foundations of Freestyle Dance with a modern commercial feel, giving dancers the opportunity to develop both their technical and artistic skills.

It’s energetic.

It’s expressive.

It’s a fantastic way to build confidence.

And it’s a style where dancers can really begin to discover their own personality as a performer.

A Class Where You Can Be Yourself

One of the things we love about Commercial Freestyle is the opportunity it gives dancers to express themselves.

Dance doesn’t have to look exactly the same on everybody.

As students develop their technique, we also encourage them to develop their individuality, confidence and performance style.

For some children, that confidence comes naturally.

For others, simply walking into their first dance class can feel like a huge achievement.

Both matter.

Our job is to help each dancer progress from their own starting point.

What Will My Child Learn?

Commercial Freestyle develops a wide range of dance and performance skills.

Students work on:

Musicality and rhythm — learning to hear and respond to the music.

Coordination — developing greater control and awareness of the body.

Technique — learning strong foundations that allow dancers to progress.

Stamina — developing the ability to maintain energy throughout a performance.

Performance skills — learning how to communicate confidence, energy and personality.

Memory and concentration — learning and remembering sequences and choreography.

Confidence — becoming increasingly comfortable performing and expressing themselves through movement.

But alongside all of those dance skills, we want our students to learn something equally important:

It’s OK to be yourself.

Commercial Freestyle for Younger Dancers

Our younger dancers are introduced to Commercial Freestyle in a fun, positive and encouraging environment.

Classes give them the opportunity to experience energetic dance while beginning to develop rhythm, coordination, musicality and confidence.

They learn how to follow their teacher, remember movements and choreography, dance alongside others and begin to develop their own performance skills.

At this age especially, enjoyment is incredibly important.

We want those early experiences of dance to leave children thinking:

“I can’t wait to come back!”

Progressing Through Commercial Freestyle

Our Commercial Freestyle programme follows the British Association of Teachers of Dancing (BATD), providing students with a structured pathway through their training.

The programme allows dancers to progressively develop their technical skills, musicality, coordination, performance quality and confidence.

As students become more experienced, they are introduced to increasingly challenging movement and choreography, allowing them to build upon the skills they have already developed.

Students also have opportunities to work towards BATD examinations and awards, providing achievable goals and a wonderful way to recognise and celebrate their progress.

BATD Examinations & Awards

We love giving our dancers something positive to work towards.

BATD examinations and awards provide students with achievable goals while giving them an opportunity to demonstrate everything they have learned.

Preparing for an examination develops commitment, perseverance, concentration, confidence and performance skills.

But at Babel, an examination result is never the only measure of progress.

Success might be remembering a whole routine.

It might be performing confidently for the first time.

It might be mastering a movement that previously felt difficult.

It might simply be finding the confidence to dance without worrying about what anybody else thinks.

Every achievement matters.

Confidence Through Dance

Dance can have an incredible effect on a young person’s confidence.

Commercial Freestyle gives students the opportunity to move, perform and express themselves.

Over time, the child who once stood quietly at the back may begin moving towards the front.

The dancer who worried about getting something wrong may become confident enough to give it a try.

The student who couldn’t imagine themselves performing may suddenly discover that they absolutely love being on stage.

Those changes don’t always happen overnight.

But watching that confidence gradually develop is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching dance.

More Than Just a Dance Class

At Babel, we believe children learn an enormous amount through dance that has nothing to do with mastering a particular step.

They learn to listen.

They learn to concentrate.

They learn to work with other people.

They learn to remember choreography.

They learn that making a mistake isn’t a disaster.

They learn to try again.

They learn to support one another.

And they learn the wonderful feeling that comes from working towards something and realising:

“I can do this.”

These are skills that can reach far beyond the dance studio.

Meet Nisha

Our Commercial Freestyle classes are taught by Nisha Lakhanpaul, whose relationship with Babel goes back much further than becoming a member of our teaching team.

Nisha grew up dancing at Babel herself.

She remained a Babel student until the age of 18 before continuing her training at LMA, where she studied Performing Arts and graduated with First Class Honours in 2023.

In September 2022, Nisha returned to Babel to reintroduce Freestyle classes — this time as a teacher.

We think there is something rather special about that.

A young dancer who grew up in our studios, continued her training and education, and then returned to inspire the next generation of Babel dancers.

Never Danced Before?

Come and give it a try!

No previous dance training is necessary to join Commercial Freestyle at Babel.

Children and young people discover dance at different stages, and we don’t believe there should be a “right” age to find something you love.

If your child has danced before, that’s wonderful.

If they’ve never taken a dance class in their life, that’s absolutely fine too.

We want them to feel welcome, supported and able to learn from wherever they are starting.

Commercial Freestyle at Babel — Dance With Personality

Technique is important.

Musicality is important.

Learning choreography is important.

But performance is also about having the confidence to let people see you.

We want our Commercial Freestyle dancers to become technically stronger while developing their own individuality and performance style.

Some will love working towards BATD examinations and awards.

Some will love performing in shows.

Some may progress into GCSE Dance or further dance education.

And some will simply come every week because dancing makes them happy.

All of those reasons are equally important.

Because at Babel, dance isn’t only about developing great dancers.

It’s also about helping young people develop confidence, friendships, resilience and memories that can stay with them for years to come.
