Keeping Our Students, Staff & Visitors Safe
The health, safety and wellbeing of everyone who attends Babel School of Dance is extremely important to us.
We want our students to enjoy their dance training in an environment that is welcoming, positive and, above all, appropriately managed and safe.
Risk assessment forms an important part of the way we manage health and safety across the school.
Our Approach to Risk Management
Dance is a physical activity and, like all physical activities, it involves an element of risk.
Our responsibility is to identify reasonably foreseeable hazards and take appropriate steps to reduce and manage those risks.
Our risk assessments consider the environments in which we teach and the activities associated with running a busy dance school.
They work alongside our Health & Safety Policy, Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy and other Babel policies and procedures.
Our Venues
Babel School of Dance currently operates from two branches:
Hayes
Heston
As the facilities and arrangements at each venue are different, we maintain separate risk assessments for each location.
This allows us to consider the particular environment, facilities and arrangements at each venue rather than relying upon one generic assessment for the whole school.

What Do Our Risk Assessments Consider?
Our risk assessments consider areas relevant to the safe operation of our dance school and venues.
Depending upon the location and activity, these may include matters such as:
Access to and use of the premises
Dance studios and teaching spaces
Floors and potential slip or trip hazards
Entrances, exits and circulation areas
Emergency procedures
Fire safety arrangements
First aid
Dance equipment and other resources
Appropriate supervision
Arrival and collection arrangements
Students, staff and visitors
Activities taking place within the dance environment
and other reasonably foreseeable hazards relevant to the particular venue or activity.
Risk Assessment Is an Ongoing Process
A risk assessment isn’t simply a document that is written and then forgotten.
We remain alert to changes in our venues, activities and working practices and will review our arrangements where appropriate.
Risk assessments may also be reviewed following:
A significant incident or accident
A significant change to a venue or activity
The introduction of new equipment or working practices
Identification of a new or previously unrecognised hazard
or where there is another reasonable reason to believe that existing arrangements should be reconsidered.
Everyone Has a Part to Play
Maintaining a safe dance environment is a shared responsibility.
Our staff are expected to follow Babel’s health and safety procedures and to report concerns or hazards where they arise.
Students are expected to listen to their teachers, behave appropriately and follow reasonable safety instructions.
Parents and guardians can help us by following the arrangements in place at our venues, supervising children where they remain responsible for them and letting us know promptly about anything that may affect their child’s safe participation in dance.
Injuries & Medical Information
Parents and guardians should ensure that Babel is informed of any relevant information that may affect their child’s safe participation in a class or activity.
Students should tell their teacher if they are injured, feel unwell or are unable to participate safely.
Where necessary, a teacher may modify a student’s participation or ask them not to undertake a particular activity where continuing could present an unreasonable risk.
The safety and wellbeing of the student will always take priority over completing an exercise or activity.
Accidents & Incidents
Accidents, injuries, incidents and near misses should be reported to an appropriate member of Babel staff.
Where required, these will be recorded and reviewed so that we can consider whether any additional action is necessary.
Learning from incidents is an important part of maintaining and improving our health and safety arrangements.
Special Activities, Performances & Events
Our main venue risk assessments relate to the regular operation of our Hayes and Heston branches.
Additional risk assessments may be completed where appropriate for activities outside our normal teaching arrangements.
These may include:
Shows and performances
External venues
Workshops
Trips and visits
Special events
or other activities where the circumstances create risks that are not adequately covered by our usual venue assessments.
Working Alongside Our Venues
Babel operates within premises that may also have their own health and safety arrangements, emergency procedures and risk assessments.
We work within the requirements of the venues we use and expect students, parents, visitors and staff to follow any reasonable safety instructions provided by Babel or venue management.
