Akram Khan Watches Big Dance Rehearsal

BIG DANCE REHEARSAL GROUP SHOTThe girls met at Kings House Sports Ground in Chiswick on Sunday 19.6.16 along with over 600 other people to rehearse for The Big Dance that will be performed on 2.7.16 in Trafalgar Square. It was a great day, very hot in the morning and breezy in the afternoon. The rehearsal was led by Jen and Jose and watched by choreographer Akram Khan. Akram Khan spoke very emotionally about losing 2 friends in the Orlando attack and wanted to show the world through the Big Dance, that the human spirit could not be quashed. This was received with cheers and loud applause. It was very inspiring. All the performers came together and worked very hard. All ages and abilities from 14 – 70+ years. There was a disabled group, professional dancers and everything in between.

We are now looking forward to going to Trafalgar Square for a rehearsal on 1.7.16 and then the performances on 2.7.16.

Acro is an exciting style of dance that combines acrobatic elements and dance technique together. The dance movements in acro are founded in ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern dance styles, but can also have hip hop and breakdance elements. The acrobatic movements are called tricks, which can be performed as a soloist, with a partner, or in a group.

Classes will take place on a Monday evening at Hayes and Harlington Community Centre with Sharon, who is fully qualified as an Acro teacher. Classes will take place alongside the existing Tap and Street lessons.

BIG DANCE 2016

Charis and I spent a very enjoyable afternoon today at Cecil Sharp House in London learning the choreography for “Big Dance” in Trafalgar Square. We shall pass this on to the girls involved. The turn section is a real challenge! The Artistic Team from Akram Khan Dance Company was inspiring and the session was full of fun and laughter as well as challenges. Exciting times ahead……..

BOBBY DAZZLERS – 24.4.16

What an amazing day. 27 children and students travelled with 6 chaperones to Her Majesty’s Theatre in London. We met at Osterley Underground Station at 9.45am and arrived early to the theatre. We took the short walk to Trafalgar Square, where they ran around, taking selfies. All ages mixed in brilliantly! We returned to the theatre and were shown to our very small dressing room in the basement. Everywhere you looked there was paraphernalia from “The Phantom of the Opera”. Shoes, etc in the dressing rooms and props hanging high above the stage. The atmosphere was electric. Each school took their turn on the stage, everyone clapping and cheering each other. After the dress rehearsal we went to eat. The only restaurant with any room (because of the marathon), was the Aberdeen Angus Steakhouse just along the road. We took over the top floor. Once we were revived with food, we went back to our dressing room to complete hair and make-up and prepare for the show. One of the nicest moments of the day for me was when a group IMG_5571 IMG_5528 IMG_5575of 10 or so of us were sat on the floor, we were aged from 7 to 55 and we played I spy! When we left the theatre to meet parents, everyone was buzzing with excitement. A lovely, lovely day that made me very proud to be a dance teacher! Thank you, Sara R
